lifter removal
I have not yet found A fairlane book but have tried to use my chiltons book on 64 1/2 to 66 mustangs to figure this out. the only time it menchions lifters is in cam removal. and it only say to remove the lifters. it doesn't tell you how. so I thought maybe they just lift up. but these dont. and then I found an artical on the internet about removing the lifter lock plate. but I can't find one on my engine."the artical was not on A 260" any help would be greatly appreciated. I really would like to get the lifters and came out before 3pm today so I can drop the block and other parts of at the mechine shop to get them hot tanked. this shop is going to be closing for A couple days. so I would like to get it in and out before that happens.

If you take the lifters out and plan to re-use them, then you need to track where each lifter goes. Reason why is they all have a wear pattern. If you swap them when reassembling, you'll have flattened cam lobes in no time at all. They must go back into the same holes. Does not apply to new cam, new lifters. Egg crate or muffin tin is a good holder for lifters while they're out.
Regarding removal, hook the inside edge where the retaining clip rides and pull gently. Should glide out with light and steady pressure. |

My lifters just came right out. I took a magnet and lifted them up and I was able to grab them and pull them out. Now, I don't know what kind of lifters you have so it might be different but mine were really simple. If you haven't tried a magnet, try that. They should just pull right out.

well I trieds A magnet and that didn't work. they come up A litle but then stop. so I tried pinching the side of the lifter with to rubber sticks and they still just come up alitle then stop even though I have A good grip with the rubber sticks.

It's a classic problem. What happens is the ends never get into the bore, and they develope a varnish deposit on the bottom. The tuffest ones I had, I got with vise grips and a prybar. Don't reuse for any reason, new ones are cheap enough. Good luck!!

Don't re-use
As mentioned before, don't try to re-use any of those worn out components. I know, it's more money. Even cheap replacement stuff will cause all kinds of grief. I know because I've done that before.

yea at first I was thinking about trying to reuse alot of stuff. but now I am going to take alitle longer building it and put some money into it.
