Question How do you know when......

How do you know when your fuel pump is out??? I tried to start my car and it won't start. It will crank, then hesitates and then dies...I also took the air filter and the arm out and tried to start it. I then opened the butterfly in the air intake and smoke came out of it. What could this be? I replaced the fuel filter thinking it was that but it wasn't. Please help, I am getting frustrated with the car and I don't want to sell it. How can I check to see if it is the fuel pump? Any help will do. Thanks

When my fuel pump went out, the way I knew was, on my car when I turn the igniton swicth on without the engine cranking over I can hear the fuel pump (sounds like a bee in an aluminum can). When my fuel pump went out I couldn't hear anything. I have a new pump I can still can hear when the fuel pump comes on.

Ya, with a good fuel pump, when you turn the key to the 'on' position (don't start the car, just the on position) it should go: "HRMMMMM!" for about one second. If you don't get that, check the inertia switch, and if that isn't it, then swap the pump.
