![]() When I fill my 1990 mustang 5.0 up the gas overflows. It does not come out where I put the gas. It comes from under the car somewhere? Its seems to be coming from the gas tank area. Is there a plug missing or something? Why does it over flow when I fill up? Does any of your cars do this? Do I need to worry about this. I am afriad to catch on fire or something. I just don't fill it up all the way. Can any one help?

![]() yes you should worry, i replaced my fuel pump a while back, and noticed a strong annoying gas smell after i put it in, well one day i filled up, and some guy in a minivan flashed his lights at me, i pulled over, and he said he saw gas coming from under my car, so i got fed up, and also realized it was dangerous, so i dropped the tank and found that the rubber seal that mates the pump in the tank, was kinked, alowing gas to seep out, also can be your (float) gas guage sender, which has a similar rubber piece, i couldnt get the gasket anywhere without having to buy a new pump, so i went to a (bearing) company with the broken gasket in hand, and matched up a size, which it was (round cut instead of square) but had no problems since.
just a thought, but your gonna need to drop the tank and find out whats going on, could be a clip, look for stains where gas could have been sitting, or seaping top side of your tank when you drop it, it's not hard once you've done it a couple times. have you replaced your pump recently? ------------------ 90 lx coupe: 175k miles, steeda water pump pully, hurst shifter, Mac cold air fenderwell, accel supercoil, ADS chip, aluminum D/S, Black magic fan, 3.27grs. ![]() lemme know what side of town your on, maybe i can help you with the tank, if you do drop it, make sure its near empty....peace surprisingly, there is only a few people on this board from s.a., me this chick, this dude "blkrain" and now you, maybe a few others but i havent seen them post in a while. |

![]() Mine does the same exact thing! Except what it is, is not that. It's just overflows out of the gas tank and goes down behind the bumper onto the ground.

![]() My car does that. I usually lift up on the nozzle as I put gas in and it doesn't overflow. If I set the trigger and walk away it almost always overflows, so I always try to get a good angle with the nozzle. I have no idea what causes this. It has always done it.

![]() I say you have nothing to worry about. Its just the overflow. After you fill it and it gets to full it will pour out of this overflow instead of coming back up the hose and covering the side of your car. My 1990 does the exact same thing.

![]() When I first got my car, the first thing I did was fill up the tank. I put the nozzle in and set the trigger and left it alone. Just as it cut itself off, I saw gas hitting the ground under the tank. I looked under to see where it came from, and it was just coming out of the overflow tube that exits the car from the bottom of my ground effects on the rear passenger side. Look there, and you'll probably see the same thing. Now when I fill up, I don't top it off and It usually doesn't have that problem.

![]() Inside the filler compartment, on the bottom, there is a drain hole where gas goes when it slops out the filler neck. There is a rubber hose connected that drains spilled fuel out under the car. Look up under the wheel well right behind the right rear tire to see where it is, and determine if thats where your "leak" is. I believe it's a 5/16" ID hose.
When my car was new, it wouldn't drain. If I over-filled the tank, it filled the car with fumes. I pulled the interior panel off and found it had a kink in it from the assembly plant. ------------------ '89 LX 5.0 - 5 speed. Original Owner '94 E-150 Conversion Van |

![]() My car will do that on a hot day if I park immediately after filling it up. It started doing it last year. It probably is a bad gasket where the filler tube goes into the tank.
