Default Eibach Springs/18" Wheels

I'm NOT looking to trick my beautiful Mustang out like one of these white-trash hip-hopping spoiled kids, but lowering my car would make it ride better (harder but better), that I know. The only thing is..I of course have 17" Futura Ultra tires mounted on 17" GT Bullit alloy rims..and when these tires go bald I was looking to put on a set of tires mounted on 18" chrome Cobra rims. But a friend told me doing BOTH would be a bad idea. The car has no ground FX or anything like that..the engine is all stock and the only add-on is the Flowmaster exhaust I just put on. Does anyone have any advice on using a lowering kit with my car or should I settle for the higher wheels and call it fair? Again I have a stock 2001 GT.
