289 to 351 Windsor swap in a 64 1/2 Mustang
Hi. I own a 1964 1/2 ('65) Mustang which has a 289 in it...I would like to put a 351 Windsor in it and need to know what I need to switch around to make it work...
The Car has a 3sp manual...will it be strong enough for a bit better than stock 351? is the 351 Windsor the same width as a 289? I'm concerned about clearance between the shock towers. Will stock mounts work? Any other advice on this project? Thanks! |

Re: 289 to 351 Windsor swap in a 64 1/2 Mustang
The 351 is taller and wider. It will fit the '65-66 with no shock tower mods. Hooker makes dedicated headers just for that swap. You may need a drop drop down air filter for hood clearance. I haven't done that swap, but Ive heard it's really easy. The 3 speed may or may not hold up with the extra torque, depending on how much you abuse it. You probably will want a top loader 4 speed and a better clutch anyway down the road.

Re: 289 to 351 Windsor swap in a 64 1/2 Mustang
how about this ...instead of swapping to a 351w - which would be nice don't get me wrong
keep the 289 or upgrade to a 302 and get you a nice pair of heads (afr 165s, trickflows ...whatever floats your boat) and a decent cam, rpm air gap, a nice carb and be done. saves you the time and money of the swap maybe even grab you a 5.0L roller block and you can have a nice roller cam while your at it is there anything even wrong with that 289 or you just want more? do you already have the 351 block?

Re: 289 to 351 Windsor swap in a 64 1/2 Mustang
like said above, special headers will be needed. The stock tranny will work for a while, but I wouldn't race it.

Re: 289 to 351 Windsor swap in a 64 1/2 Mustang
i have done this swap
you will have to change the motor mounts and the clearance to the hood will be very close the bolt pattern to the transmission will also be different and you you need a larger bell housing to fit the windsor honestly you would be better off spending your money on a 302 0r your 289 with upgrades parts are cheaper and more readlily available |

Re: 289 to 351 Windsor swap in a 64 1/2 Mustang
i swaped from a 250 inline six to a slightly modified 302 v8, I am still rocking the 6cly 3speed manual and its holding up great, havent had a problem yet. (and it does get beat) If yours came stock with a 3speed v8, i would think it would be beefy enough for awhile at least. I have been planning on swapping to a t5 for along time, just no money for it yet. I dont think your on drugs fatoeknee, vsejr might be though. If your planning on the 351 i would go with that, never can you have too many cubes. When i just swapped to my 302 my hood clearance was pretty tight, but its a good excuse to buy that cowl induction hood you've always wanted anyway.....right?

Re: 289 to 351 Windsor swap in a 64 1/2 Mustang
I guess I'll address the motor mounts.
I'd change those out for sturdier ones even if you kept the 289. I ended up shearing one of mine completely in half, and I rarely even give the engine half throttle. Considering the max hp/trq is around 225, you have to admit they're pretty pathetic. The other one was on it's way out too. The '66 style mounts I ended up installing are doing the job nicely. It's really cheap and simple to do, also.

Tree of shame is parts of motorcycles that have wrecked on "The Dragon."
The road is 11 miles with 318 turns. Its in the mountains, so falling off a cliff suc's. Heres some other sites to check out. http://www.killboy.com/ http://www.leanonthedragon.com/ My favorite http://www.tailofthedragon.com/dragon_trucks.html It really suc's to meet a truck there.
