![]() I would like to swap out my stock shifter for a new B&M I just purchased. Do I have to remove the center console around the shifter to replace it, and if so how do I do this? My car is a 1991 GT.

![]() I believe you only have to pop out the square piece that is around the shifter boot, not the whole console. There are no screws holding it down, just pull straight up on it and it will pop out in four corners. Once there you just unscrew the boot and then the shifter.

![]() Yes, all you need to do is pull up the boot cover...and have very skinny fingers and great skill with a wrench to get at the back screws. Also, when I did mine, I had a little trouble getting the old shifter to come off - I ended up hitting it with a hammer and long screwdriver from underneath the vehicle.

![]() get a small screwdriver and pop up each corner of the black panel one at a time,(easier and safer than pulling the whole thing up) once that is up you will have to unsrcrew the shifter knob and the boot/panel can come off, then theres a rubber insulation piece with a metal holddown you have to unscrew and take out, then you can get to the shifter, take the 4 bolts out, it most likely will be stuck on there really good, you'll have to pry it up because there's sealant on the underside of the shifter,
about the back 2 bolts, you may want to get a pair of sidecuts and "modify" your console in the area that you wont see when you put it back together, make 2 cutouts in the plastic so you can get a ratchet extension in there, you could also follow the directions that come with the shifter ![]() ------------------ 88 Notch, B&M Ripper, 3.73's, Ported E7's, Explorer int. w/ ported lower, pulleys, 1.7RR's, BBK headers, off-road H-pipe, flowmasters, subframes, 65mm TB, March ram air ,MSD coil, U/L control arms, 155lph f/p, Crane Adj.FPR, Nitto drag radials, best 1/4--> 13.76@101.4 on a 2.17 60ft |
