Motor Mounts
I am going to replace the motor mounts in my stang this weekend and was wondering if ya had any tips or pointers, or is it pretty straight forward? This will be my first motor mount replacement! Thanks!

Soak the bolts in WD-40 for 10 minutes or so before you remove them. It makes it a lot easier.

Use some rust breaker overnight before you do the swap. You may need a breaker bar and pipe to loosen the main nuts. Just use a floor jack under the pan to slightly lift the motor (once loosened) and replace the mounts one-at-a-time. Shouldn't take any more than an hour, tops.
BTW: If anybody's interested, I've got a set of late model convertible (stiffer) mounts for sale that just came off my car. Only about a year old, in perfect condition. I've gone with ASP solid mounts. These will fit '87-93 cars. Check my website for details. ------------------ Jeff Chambers Trophy Stock #3 11.97 Seconds / 114.5 MPH Chambers Racing Team |

While we're on the subject, what do you guys think about the Energy Suspension Motor Mounts? Their ad says something to the effect of "much stiffer than stock, but more absorbant than metal mounts." Has anyone tried these? Likes / Dislikes?
Oh, and I used WD-40 and a breaker bar (the end of my jack handle) to get the bolts loose. Good luck, E ------------------ 1991 5.0 LX Coupe -37,800 miles 13.17 @ 106.14 mph w/ 2.138 60' Pro-Charger D-1SC on the way!!! |

Cool! Sounds pretty easy! I have an impact wrench so hopefully that will be good! I also have a breaker bar (end of jack handle lol) just in case! Thanks for the replies!

I did the moroso solid mounts myself (motor and trans) didn't feel any rougher, the again the motor was only a 302 and was balanced, so that could have made a small difference. Now I can tell you that if a plug wire goes out on solid mounted engine you'll feel it. IMO anything is better than those wimpy factory mounts. When I pulled my engine the first time one of 'em fell completely apart and I had unbolted the ears from the engine before yanking the motor.

My advice is going with convertable too instead of original one.
Here's three pics for making your choice. Convertable ones from two angles and the old ones from my car. From the replacement: If you can find a do it yourself garage you'll be in heaven. I've use an air ratchet an iron bar and a tranny lift for the job. If you want to know how i've done this. Go to this link. Sorry! There's no pics of my job. http://www.white-gt.com/mustang/tech/mount/a_mount.htm Marc ------------------ 88 GT, K&N, Home Made Ram Air, Convertible Engine Mount, Dynomax Super Turbo, 180° thermostat, Energy sway bar bushings, Strut tower brace. *** And Risen from the dead *** My GT My Web Page |

Hey Axeman,
How much did you pay for yours? I need a set before I drop my motor back in. Mine were so bad the motor sagged and the fan was making contact with the shroud. The blades have a nice little notch in them where the shroud wore them away. Fellow Mustang owners who have a notch in their fan, however slight, should change their mounts out ASAP. Hey White GT, Coool animation. Given the Axemann a little comp aye. I seen that for real too many times! |

That is the reason I am changing mine... I just recently went to Key West and while I was there the bearings in my fan clutch went, and the fan was way loose and almost falling off.. so I got a flex fan as a temp fix.. I had to take the shroud off completely to get it in since the engine was so low on it.. you could see where the old fan was hitting the shroud. An electric fan will come soon.. here is the fan now, without the shroud! See how close the blade is to the compressor!! ------------------ Joe! 1988 GT, 167,000 miles!!! 13.71@105mph Check out my listing! Click here! OK so it's done! That was not as easy as I thought!!! The old ones fell apart coming out and the new ones were a pain to get in!!! But it's much better now.. the car feels smoother, and so far that damn vibration I had is gone! we'll see!! Here are some pics of the old ones!
Now I have to put the damn shroud back on!!! ------------------ Joe! 1988 GT, 167,000 miles!!! 13.71@105mph Check out my listing! Click here! Or my website: www.joe4speed.com 1999 Ninja ZX-6R 10.32@135mph! [This message has been edited by JL1314 (edited 01-29-2001).] |

Congratulation JL1314. I was not told you but i got pain too for mine. I was thought to trash my old engine mounth but i think i'll going to keep them like a trophee
For me. The removing was done with a rotation and i've tried to put back the new one in the same way. But this was been more tought that i could imagine. Now this is done and it's a good thing. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was formatting this POS computer (again!).
89LXNB - I paid $90 for my mounts from Ford. You may be able to find a similar made product elsewhere for a lot cheaper, but I like actual Ford products and was told they are the best ones to get anyway. Congrats on getting yours installed JL1314. I still haven't gotten around to installing mine, but plan to install them when I pull my intake and heads. Hopefully that will make the job a bit easier by giving me a little more room to move around. ------------------ 90 Mustang LX 5.0 My Ride*My Site |

AxemanZZ:
definitely do yours with everything out! It's pretty damn tight down there, I thought!! Not much room to maneuver them back in! Definitely jack up one side of the engine first so it kind of tilts! I figured that out on the passenger side one. Good luck! White GT: LOL I should keep mine for a trophy too!! But, as with everything in my Stang, it's always harder than it seems... I always run into some little problem while doing it!! I swear to myself every time that I'm just gonna pay someone to do it all... nahhhhh! |
