Angry ... squeak squeak ...

What is this new damn annoying sound from my steering. I just got the power steering fixed and now it squeaks when i turn the wheel. I COULD turn the radio up, but its still pissing me off. Its a 1968 coupe w/289 and AT. Could it be bad bearings or what? Any help is appreciated! Thanks...

Does the squeak change when you turn the wheel further or the same all the time? Have you had someone do the turning while you try and track down where it is coming from?

umm... well i havent tracked it own yet buttttt! i'll get to it. the sound comes when ever the wheel is turned left or right.

hate ta break this to ya dude.. but in 68 & 69 esp models... that annoyin squeek yer hearin may be shock towers collapsing... replacing them isnt too bad, if ya can find replacements & have the equipment...1 day, you'll find that right or left turns arent too bad to do... but drivin from the passenger seat to hold the damned thing straight is another matter.. & tires will only last a couple o thousand miles.... *from personal experiences*.....luck dude...

HOw exactly can i check if its the shock towers? How much to get that fixed? Oh this sucks.

look for possible rust around frames & shock towers... (in & outside) mustangs had an annoyin sqweek regardless of this condition existing or not... if towers are in line A& clean.. your next step is new springs & bushings...body & A frame... hope thisll solve it!...

Dark Horse, have you checked the belt tension to your power sreering pump? A loose belt makes an annoying screech if it's too loose when you turn the steering wheel. Just a thought.

its coming from the passenger side.. my car also floats along after it hitts like 40 mph.. it sucks i cant even switch lanes quick with out fear of losing it.

Dark Horse, have you checked the ball joints? How about the shocks? If it's handling badly as well, then it has to be in the steering linkage or in the suspension. Does anything just need grease? Push up and down on the front end of the car with it parked. Does this make it squeak? If not, it has to be in the steering mechanism (includes ball joints). You should be able to trace this down with a little elbow grease. Hope this helps a little.

Another idea...
Nothing to do with the squeeks but,
If you fear loosing control at speed or after hitting small humps in the road...
Our 69 Mach 1 was doing this. when we hit a hump or bump in the highway, the alignment seemed to change. (and was). The cam bolt on the lower accentric on the control arm was moving. It wasnt loose, but had grease and grime under it and when the weight shifted, the control arm moved too and resulted in many scarry moments. Check yours.
