Red face steering wheel removal

Has any one got the secret to removing the original horn ring from the steering wheel? I am replacing the original cracked up wheel with a new lecarra leather wheel. I've read the manual but the horn ring just doesnt seem to move.

Need to know the year of your Mustang. On my '67 the horn ring rotates counterclockwise to unhook.
