Question Got a big problem with a '65 GT

OK maybe you guys can help with this problem me and my dad can not figure out. We have a really nice '65 GT with a 289 small block. It was completely restored and ran great for awhile. We then started noticing what we think to be a backfireing occuring. It makes a lous "click" sound and you can feel it in the gas pedal. The problem then turned into a bigger one. We couldnt get it started. We knew it had spark (checked that) knew it was getting gas( Checked that). So we decided to rebuild the carb in hopes that may be the problem...well it just got worse. Here is where we stand:
It will start on occasion but soon after it starts it begins to spew gas right out of the carb, quite a bit too. Maybe 10 sec. or so after we start it up. We thought maybe it was the timing but it is dead on. thats not it. Does anyone know why gas is pouring out of the carb? Please help us, were desperate. thanks!!

I would stay with the timing issue. When the gas comes out of the carb, that means that one of your pistons is shooting air through an intake valve that should be closed. Have you ever replaced the timing chain on this engine or how many miles since rebuild? You also say the timing has been checked but how did you do this? The harmonic balancers are known to crack and move, so the mark might not be where it should.

OK I guess I will stick with that. Im now really knowledgeable on how its done but my friend was helping me timing. We simply found the "mark" and the 2 lines matched up perfectly. He had a timing light but never used b/c it appeared to be OK. Maybe he should have. I will tell him to bring it over again and try it. Maybe the mark is out of alignment. Thanks!

If i were you i would try turning the distributor well the engine is running. If the sound you are getting is like a ping then your timming is to advanced. If that doesnt make a difference make sure all the cylenders are firing. To test that well the engine is running pull of a spark plug wire one at a time to see if the engine runs differently. If you pull of a spark plug wire and it doesnt change the way the engine runs then that cylender is dead. Just because your engine has been rebuilt tdoesnt mean the did it right. Personally it sounds like a tinning prob. I would see if the timing chas has skipped a tooth.

With excessive wear, timing chains stretch, skip, etc. Just adjusting the distributor may not show evidence of a timing chain problem.

On the older stangs, the balancer has some sort of a paper shock absorber between the inner and outer rings of the balancer. The outer ring CAN slip, which moves the timing marks off. Best way to make sure of the mark, is to get a false spark plug, or a long bolt with the same thread installed into CYL #1, and slowly ratchet the motor till it butts up against the bolt near TDC, then mark the balancer, then ratchet it backward, reversing the process and mark it just before BDC then scratch yer timing mark exactly between the 2.

Definately sounds like the timing chain tho.

Hope that helps!
