Question gearing?

ok i have a 89 GT and i want to put new rear end gears in it. i have a Auto with a shift kit and have heard many say 3.73's are the best for an auto. i do as much highway driving as i do street driving, so i don't want to over rev the engine at fast speeds, would 3.55's be better? i do want a quicker launch cause these 2.73's arn't cutting it when i street race! other cars usually get a jump on me off the line. my car just doesn't feel powerfull when i start. if i leave my car in 1st and shift it myself i feel way more power once i hit above 3500 rpm's, would a stall converter be to my advantage? any input would be great!!!
