There have been some known problems with the headlight and foglight switch assembly which could be causing you problems.
Ford placed a Technical Service Bulletin (89-17-11) addressing the problem which calls for a replacement of the switch and few other componets. I don't believe there was ever a recall, however. Since the problem occured only after you made some changes, I'd double check everything before you go replacing switches. The culprit is likely something else. --nathan
