grinding into third is most likely the syncros.

if you do work yourself and are careful you can probably rebuild it yourself. I rebuilt mine myself and am a far cry from a mechanic. You can get a 94 pc. rebuild kit for $159, I got mine from D&D Performance. It has everything you need. And a manual for $20, it has all of the information you need in it to do the rebuild.

If you don't plan on doing it yourself or can't get good deals from local shops then I don't know if it would be much cheaper than just buying a new tranny.
