I say bikes are fun, but it'll get old pretty quick if you're commuting a lot. I think a 4-banger car is your best bet. I remember the old Datsun Z cars...always wanted one "back in the day".
Here's what my son did recently. His 87 GT is now so un-daily-driver-friendly that he bought a friend's old Toyota Camry, automatic. Unlike his Mustang, this car has a radio, a heater, and great gas mileage for his commute. He paid $1500 for it. He drives his Stang to friends' houses at night and on weekends.
