Default o/r h-pipes

My 98gt has the whole exaust package and the check engine light wnet on from the start. It seems (After I did some checking) that the ecm's on the 98's are particulary hard to please. If a sensor goes out the computer reverts to a default mode. ( I don't know if this is the correct term) and uses a value that was good at one time. Allowing one to get somewhere for help.
