my wifes 96 sebring was doing the exact same thing. I checked the fluid level and it seemed fine...I then went to pull the pan and saw a lot of fliud leaking from the gasket, pulled the pan to change the filter and only about 2 quarts came out! I didn't know the car had to be running and warm to check the fluid. After changing everything, she shifts smooth and doesn't have that problem at all anymore!
