Starter is located on passenger side tucked up under exhaust header. Access is from the bottom of the car. It is an easy job and can normally be done with car on jackstands. Some aftermarket headers obscure the starter and sometimes its easiest to loosen the header before attempting to r&r the starter. The important thing when changing one is to not exchange the old one before you have the replacement in your hand. Verify the nose length and number of teeth on the starter gear. Also check the ring gear for chipped teeth as this can sometimes indicate the old starter is the incorrect one.
Starter whine is caused by the Bendix gear not engaging the flywheel/flexplate ring gear. Try to find out if its the starter thats faulty or the ring gear thats faulty. |
