I've never heard of that either.
I replaced my stock gauge faces in my '88 with white Cobra ones, and it was a very easy job. Just make sure to draw exactly where your needles were pointing before you pull the needles off! And make sure to remove all the glue from where the stock ones were. I didn't and it made the lights behind it look uneven when the lights are on.
