The extension were part of a recall in 90 & 91. Without the extensions, the harness was a tad too short and resulted in wires/pins pulling from the connectors as the engine moved on the mounts. The extensions effectively provided some strain relief. There should be a sticker on the fan shroud of your buddies car documenting the installation of the extensions as satisfying the voluntary recall.
