I seem to remember my neighbor having this problem a number of years ago... I'm thinking that he swapped out the tailshaft housing for one that mounted the gear on the opposite side???

It has to be the tailhousing as Phillyfanfrombirth said. I've never seen a gear on the output shaft that was made to turn the other way.

Your transmission must have some strange tailhousing from who knows what.
