I havent had this problem, mostly because I still ran a mechanical fuel pump when I had a motor in my car. I would just make sure you have a good filter before the pump, along with following the basics with electric pumps. Make sure it's mounted as close to the tank as possible.
What type of pump is it by the way? You could also look into a fuel pump controller, but I don't know anything about those specifically.
