Get (buy or borrow) a timing light. Get one powered by the battery. You need some kind of manual to tell you what you're doing. My feeling here is that you are just starting out.

My advice is to read, read, read. Instruction manuals (basic) will tell you alot. Retarded timing can let combustion gases "shoot" out the exhaust manifold instead of making power as is intended.

A check on ignition timing is your first step here. Set it at what the factory specs say. The manual will tell you where and how to do it.
