Mercury really the only difference between the 390 heads and the 428cj heads are the size of the ports and the intake and exhuast valves. Ur freind might have a set of them on his failaine and that is what u might have. Check it out and see. The 428 cj heads will fit on any 390. It is just the ports and valves are bigger other than that there is no difference. There are differences in the intake thougth really big ones. The best 428 cj intake will have a no 1 stamed on the back of it. The one i have in my garage is a no 2. Although i have replaced it with and edelbrock performer rpm wich is aluminum better than the no 1 intake. All these parts do fit on the 390 though. I would really like to hear more about ur freinds 390. I bet we are really close to the same motor.
