Default Changing Axles

My friend and myself are looking to convert his 89GT to a whole 5 lug combo. He has everything for the change except for the rear axles. We are now wondering if we should stick with the 28 spline axles? or upgrade to the 31 spline? We weren't sure if the stock posi unit will accept the 31 spline axles?
