Ever try to start a car with a pair of screwdrivers, and get a killer spark show while doing it? Ever happen to notice the "weld" marks on the screwdrivers afterwards? That's what ends up happening inside the solenoid. Just like the screwdrivers, the disc inside the solenoid can start to "stick" to the posts inside. This is common with older solenoids, and requires replacement. A quick fix until then is to rap the solenoid with the handle of a large screwdriver each time it sticks.
