Thanks to all who answered. After changing the fuel filter, fuel pump, electronic ignition, cleaning the carb and burning out a starter in the process I located the problem. It turns out that the ignition wire that connects to the switch behind where the key is inserted was frayed. It seems that it heated up as the car was operated and eventually it just cut out. A 10 cent fix to a problem that drove me nuts for a month. Aren't classics fun?
